The request from Virág’s mother

Dear Children Cancer Foundation,

With this letter I would like to share the story of Virág V, date of birth: 07.06.1998, from the beginning of her illness, going through a long way in the hope of recovery. I will only give a summary of the past seventeen years, as you know the story of Virág very well, since you have been supporting her for so many years and for which I will always be grateful, and I don’t only mean the financial support received from the Foundation but all the emotional support we received during the hard times.

Virág’s sufferings started in 2002 when she was diagnosed for a malignant tumour in the cerebellum. She had two operations in the same year and she was given the maximum dosage of 33 radiotherapy treatments and 12 intravenous chemotherapy treatments. The entire series of treatments were complete in November 2003. We thought that our hospital-related tasks finished here, but soon after Virág started to suffer from serious hormone-related issues and in 2006 they started her endocrinology treatment. Until 2010 she has been receiving a course of injections on a monthly basis. We are still going back to the hospital, but only for controls.  Besides all these issues, my daughter is able to live a full life, except for one thing, which is by now means a big problem in her life.

One of the issues, which we cannot do anything against, is that the height of Virág has been limited due to the years long endocrinology treatment. Her height is only 147 cm. The other, which we can help, and the reason why I contacted you is the following. Dear Mr. István Balogh, maybe you can help Virág, who already helped so many children. Virág unfortunately lost her hair during the treatment and despite of all our attempts it failed to grow back. We have been attending intense hair treatments for nearly two years, which is a huge expense on a monthly basis; we have been through numerous consultancy services, but still no success.

So far my daughter didn’t want a wig, but by now maybe also due to her desperation she decided to have one. She finished primary school, now she is doing the second year at a four year Economic Secondary School. We had a look at several wigs, but we definitely need expert help and here in the countryside we cannot contact anyone.

The attending physician of Virág, when we contacted him said the followings: “Be happy for the result, that’s the least problem”.

I think it is very important to write down that, as you also know it very well, we are very happy for the results as we are aware of the seriousness of the illness, but if you could help us in any ways to jointly make her only dream come true!

I apologise for bothering you for so long due to my extended letter.

Thank you for your understanding and help also on behalf of my child.

Arló, 9th November 2014

Yours faithfully,

Tünde G.
