At the annual congress of the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC) in Bucharest in 2014, Hungary was represented by the Children Cancer Foundation

The European Confederation of Patients with Cancer (ECPC) held its annual congress in Bucharest on June 20-22, 2014, attended by 140 patients, survivors, patient organisation representatives and healh care professionals from a total of 23 European countries. Hungary was represented by the Children Cancer Foundation.

The ECPC Board of Directors gave an account on their activities in 2013 and put forward their proposals for the year 2014.

The president of our Foundation, who is also a member of the Supervisory Board, takes an active part in the activities of the Federation in Hungary and Brussels.

During the three days of the congress, representatives from several countries pointed out that the inequality in chances for cure is due to differences in health care accessability between countries and regions within the same country. The economic crisis of the past few years made existing differences even larger, depriving cancer patients of the care they require. The increasing burden of cancer in Europe will affect not only the patients and their families but will have a significant impact on health care systems and economic competitiveness as well. The aging of the European population is associated with an exponential increase in the incidence of cancer, which means that one European citizen is lost to cancer in every 10 seconds during our lives.

In view of these facts and on the basis of the principle   ̎Nothing about us without us!  ̎, leaders of the ECPC emphasised that they would do their best to make the European Parliament and the European Committee hear the voice and answer the questions of European cancer patients. Cancer has no respect for boundaries, either geographical or cultural, and affects all segments of society. Therefore, all nations need to contribute to its defeat.

We Europeans must co-operate to achieve our goals. Patients, health care professionals, researchers, the industry and politicians must join their effots to fight cancer, our common enemy.
